It may seem basic, but many people don’t know how to set a table.  We all eat out so much that when it comes to setting the table at home we’re left trying to recall if the bread plate goes on the left or right?  If you know, there’s a chance at least one of your guests will not.

In this case a picture is worth a thousand words.  Here are some basic rules.  

1. )Just like in this example, the bread plate is to the left of the fork. 

2.) Forks go in the order you eat to the left of the plate.  If there is more than one, the fork on the outside is for the first course.

3.) Knives to the right of the plate.

4.) Spoons to the right of knives.

5.) Glasses above the knife.  

The rules are not as formal as they used to be.  You can try putting the napkin in the middle of the plate or under the forks.  You can also bring additional silver for the dessert course or place it above the plate.

  1. I have to agree that a lot of people don’t really know how to set a table….including me. That table setting in the photo looks so simple yet very elegant.
